A Decade of Family Fun at the Races
A strong morning thunderstorm didn’t keep Cradle families and friends away from Arlington Park for our tenth annual Day at the Races on Sunday, June 27. By noon, the sun had come out and it was a hot and steamy – but dry – day at the park.
The Cradle’s highly anticipated summer event was held in the cool and lovely International Room overlooking the track. More than 270 guests of all ages enjoyed a delicious lunch, an extensive silent auction, a raffle featuring an Apple iPad and other great prizes, activities for the kids and exciting horse racing.
Looking adorable in their summer outfits, the children helped their parents pick out horses to bet on. They also had fun making craft projects and having their faces painted. "I'm going to watch the horses with my cousin Lily!" declared Cradle baby Abby Buechele, 6, as the two girls created artwork in the Kids' Corner.
Especially popular among the younger set was the Quick Pick game, generously sponsored by Mary and Corry Connelly. For a $10 donation, a child could select a beautifully wrapped package containing a surprise gift that was sure to delight. Adults, too, could choose a unique gift for a $20 donation.
Day at the Races is organized by The Cradle Associates, a professional board of The Cradle comprised of adult adoptees, adoptive parents and champions of adoption. This year’s event was co-chaired by Associates Carlos Paret and Kirsten Passalino, who is also a Cradle parent.
“With so many new and familiar faces and so much new energy from the Associates Board, the volunteers and, most importantly, all of the donors and guests,” said Kirsten, “the 10th anniversary Day at the Races was especially memorable. This is a tradition we want to continue for many more years to come!”
Since 2001, Day at the Races has raised more than $380,000 in support of The Cradle’s high quality adoption programs and services.
Fun was had by all of The Cradle families and friends who attended the 10th Annual Day at the Races.
