Celebrates Ten Years

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day for the 10^th annual Cradle Classic on Monday, June 7 at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie.  With temperatures in the low 70s, brilliant sunshine and a light, cool breeze, the conditions were outstanding for the 79 golfers who took part in the tournament.

The day began with a little practice on the driving range and putting green, and a relaxing lunch on the Club’s patio.  Then, each foursome set out to a different hole for the noon shotgun start.  Players commented on the beauty – and challenges – of the championship course, designed in 1917 by renowned golf course architect Donald J. Ross.

Cradle dad Bill Myers came all the way from Tampa, Florida to participate in The Cradle Classic and his foursome won the tournament!  Bill, along with Shawn Emerson, John Morehouse and Gary Smither, posted an impressive 24-under-par score of 116.  There were also contests throughout the course to challenge players’ driving and putting skills, and a few chances to go for a hole-in-one.

Following their 18 holes of golf, the players returned to the clubhouse for a cocktail reception, dinner and silent auction.  Cubs and Sox tickets, wine tastings, golf foursomes, hotel packages and a football autographed by Chicago Bears legend and Cradle dad Gale Sayers were just some of the tempting items vying for bids in the auction.     

Congratulations to Modern Carriage Werks, Inc., winner of our $1,000 “Go for the Green” cash raffle. Vincent Rollberg, of Modern Carriage Werks, Inc., has generously donated the $1,000 prize back to The Cradle. The Bridgeview, Illinois based company has supported The Cradle Classic and other Cradle events for several years.

Greg Kaczmarek, who has chaired The Cradle Classic since 2006, spoke to guests about the three great kids he and his wife Sharon adopted through The Cradle, and the importance of continuing to support the agency’s services for children, expectant women and families.  “The tenth Cradle Classic was attended by a lot of longtime Cradle supporters,” Greg said, “and was made possible by the hard, yet happy work of the Golf committee and volunteers.  The committee is focused on planning an enjoyable day for all who attend and advancing the work of The Cradle.”

During the reception, The Cradle Foundation recognized the eight individuals and businesses that have sponsored or participated in The Cradle Classic since its inception, our tournament “veterans.”  We are extremely grateful to lead sponsor The Northridge Group, and to all of our other sponsors, underwriters, auction donors, volunteers and golfers for helping to ensure the day’s success.
